Sterling . Where Is the ECM on a 1994 Altima? The engine control module (ECM) on the 1994 Nissan Altima acts as the brain of the vehicle. This component takes all of the information from the various sensors in the Altima and adjusts the timing, fuel, air and spark to make the vehicle run as efficiently as possible. When this component fails, the sensors are forced to run "blindly," causing the vehicle to run poorly or not run at all. Location The ECM on the 1994 Nissan Altima is somewhat hidden. Locate it behind the dashboard near the rear of the Altima's radio. The ECM is a flat metal box, approximately 6 inches long by 6 inches wide by 2 inches thick (see Resources). Causes of Failure There are several key causes to the failure of the 1994 Altima's ECM. The main cause is an electrical short, which can be created by simply hooking up jumper cables backward. Moisture in the car can cause the circuits inside the ECM to rust, also causing the ECM to fail. Relearning The ECM stores all of the vehicle's electronic information and makes adjustments to compensate for any errors or variables. When a new ECM is installed in a 1994 Altima, the driver may experience minor issues, like harsh shifting or rough idle, until the computer completes its relearning procedure. The relearning process is completed by simply driving the vehicle normally. This can take up to 40 driving cycles to complete. ResourcesCar Parts Depot: Nissan Altima ECM Image
Sterling . How to Change an Electronic Control Module on a 1999 G20The 1999 Infiniti G20´s Electronic Control Module (ECM) is an important computer that stores your vehicle´s trouble codes and alerts you of any problems by turning on the "Check Engine" light. A malfunctioning ECM can cause problems with your engine´s timing, in addition to issues with the fuel pump. A failing ECM must be changed quickly to ensure that your vehicle runs safely. Be sure to purchase a new, model-specific ECM at an auto parts store. Difficulty:Moderately Challenging Instructions Things You'll Need Ratchet wrench and socket set Screwdriver Step by Step : 1 Use a socket wrench to disconnect the ground cable from the battery´s negative lead. In the cabin of the vehicle, locate the passenger side center console trim panel. This panel is held in place with four screws. Use a screwdriver to remove these screws and pull the trim panel out from the center console. 2 Locate the ECM in the space behind the removed center console trim panel. The ECM is a rectangular-shaped metal box protected by a plastic casing. The casing is held to the side of the center console by two mounting screws. Remove these two screws with a screwdriver, pull the casing out of the center console and disconnect the electrical wiring that runs into the ECM by hand. 3 Remove the ECM from the plastic casing by removing the small screws that secure it along the perimeter of the plastic casing. Once the screws are removed, pull the ECM out and replace it with the new ECM. Secure the new ECM in the plastic casing by reattaching the screws along the casing perimeter. 4 Attach the electrical wiring to the new ECM and place the casing back into the center console and secure it in place with its two screws. Reattach the passenger side center console trim panel and install its four screws. Reconnect the ground cable to the battery´s negative lead. Start the engine and make sure that the "Check Engine" light is not turned on. Tips & Warnings If your "Check Engine" light is still on after installing a new ECM, this indicates that there is an error in the ECM wiring connection. *In this way, the clutch disk can catch up with an engine that is turning faster — or more slowly — than before and can transmit its motion to the transmission. 5. On the clutch side of the flywheel, the drive train continues, but its name changes. It is not called the crankshaft anymore; it is now called the transmission input shaft because it carries the power via the turning shaft into the transmission. It rotates at the same speed and in the same direction as all the parts I've covered up to now. 6. Inside the transmission is a group of gears of varying sizes. These gears can move together and apart, in various combinations, to determine how fast and with how much power the car's wheels will turn, and in which direction. 7. The next part of the drive train emerges from the other side of the transmission, with another new name. This time it is called the transmission output shaft because it transmits the power that the transmission is putting out to the driveshaft. 409

The U-joints enable the driveshaft to move freely without affecting the more rigid transmission shaft at one end, and to absorb the vertical movement of the rear axle and wheels at its other end. Figure 9-3: The differential causes the axle and the rear wheels to move at right angles to the spinning driveshaft. . Chapter 9: Take the Drive Train: Understanding Transmissions... 77 / On cars with transverse engines, you can find the U-joints where each axle joins the transaxle and where each connects with the car's drive wheels. Called constant velocity (CV) joints, they can, like other U-joints, Sterling . What is the standard speed limit for cars on interstate highways in Idaho?
* turn and move in any direction — up, down, and from side to side. 9. The differential (see Figure 9-3) is another box of gears that takes the movement of the spinning driveshaft through a 90-degree angle to the axle that turns the drive wheels. It also allows each side of the axle to rotate at a different speed. This ability is necessary because, when you go around a sharp curve, the outside wheel travels farther than the inside wheel and has to move more quickly than the inside wheel, just like the ice skater at the end of a snap-the-whip line. Sterling . How did the automobile effect trading?
* 10. The differential also provides the drive wheels with extra power by using its gears to convert every three revolutions of the driveshaft into one revolution of the drive wheels, which is called a 3:1 gear ratio. On front-wheel-drive cars, the differential is located inside the transmission; that's why it's called a transaxle assembly. 1 Axle A^L ^ Gears rJ^HB^S*------ Differential m*TSMP"**THfti IW1 I rim 1 T Sterling .
